A Quinault Indian village along the Moclips River. Although first settled around 1902, Moclips was not established until 1905 with the completion of the Northern Pacific railroad and the first Moclips Beach Hotel. Moclips became a real town with restaurants, hotels, candy store, theater, canneries and the M.R. Smith Lumber and Shingle Mill. Many fires in the 1910's destroyed much of Moclips along the beach. The latest was in 1948 at the top of the hill where a welding accident destroyed many homes and businesses. four schools once taught children from Taholah to Ocean Shores. Two of these buildings exist today.

MOCLIPS BEACH HOTEL

The grand-daddy of all beach hotels was first built in 1905. This two story building consisted of 100 rooms. Five months after it's opening in July 1905, it was destroyed by fire. Dr. Edward Lycan who built this hotel was not deterred. In 1907, he built the more grand three story Moclips Beach Hotel which boasted 270 "outside" rooms. This hotel lasted until Feb. 1911 when a fierce pacific storm destroyed the two wings. In December 1913, another storm did further damage. One month later, in Jan. 1914, the final storm took its toll. You can see the remaining pilings from the hotel in the movie Mc Q with John Wayne.
