Fire O'er The Water

by Michael Ann Gigstead

Back in 1978, the Ocean City community had an idea, "Let's have a professional fireworks display next July to help celebrate the Nation's birthday!" Once the decision was made, it was time to raise money. From that point on, clam chowder, chili feeds and other events were supported by the community and the visitors.

Despite all of the hard work, in the middle of June 1979, the fund was short by $900.00. Carol Davis of sunrise market went to work. She asked the business community of The North Beach to help support the display.

The first year, the crowd viewed an amazing $1,800.00 extravaganza. Under Carol's leadership, Fire O'er The Water has become bigger and better each year. The clam chowder and chili feeds have gone by the wayside, but Carol manages to bring this event together almost single handedly.

Vendors and live music are part of the fun. For those that have not yet experienced fireworks on the beach, this display is free to the public. It is visible from the Copalis, Ocean City and Ocean Shores beaches. Actually the fireworks show is better seen from a little distance. There is lots of room on the beach, but it does take quite a while for the vehicles to get off the beach after the display. Be patient.

The north side of the Ocean City Beach approach road, is reserved for the Pyrotechnical Technician Team, the Fire District #7 Volunteer Fire Department, and the Aid Crew along with the Grays harbor County Sheriff's Department, the Washington State Patrol, and the Ocean Shores Police. In case of an emergency, they have the ability to help or get help.

Personal fireworks should be aimed at the ocean. NOT THE DUNES. It is also necessary to bring a trash bag and clean up any debris left from the fireworks you bring.

this display is made possible through the generosity of the businesses and citizens of Grays Harbor community. We all want you to have a SAFE and SANE 4th of July.
